One Step Beyond Lightning Squad Kids Triathlon Training


Kids Steps (The Lightning Squad) Training is for athletes aged 7 to 14.

Summer 2021: $170 / 8 week coach led training program / Maximum 20 athletes / Sunday, June 27 to Sunday, August 22.

We are partnered with Brooks Doughtie of All Out Multisport to provide a comprehensive youth and junior triathlon training program. Coach Brooks is a level II USA Triathlon coach who specializes in working with youth triathletes.

As part of USAT certification (among others), all of our coaches have passed NCSI background history checks and taken the USOC Safesport course.

During this session, athletes will prepare for the AE Finley Frenzy Youth Triathlon on August 22.

Our workouts will generally be between the Raleigh NC State area to the Cary/Morrisville area. Locations will change week to week based on best use. We will send a detailed schedule at the beginning of each week. Practices typically take place on Wednesdays 445-545pm and Sundays 400-500pm, unless otherwise noted in the weekly email. Practices will include greenway riding, greenway running, occasional swim workouts, trail hikes, and running/fun games. Summer Squad 2021



Spring 2021: $210 / 10 week coach led training (2x practice / week) / Maxium 20 athletes / Wednesday, March 3 to Sunday, May 9

We are partnered with Brooks Doughtie of All Out Multisport to provide a comprehensive youth and junior triathlon training program. Coach Brooks is a level II USA Triathlon coach who specializes in working with youth triathletes.

During the 10 week spring program, athletes will prepare for a local kids event or a coach hosted bike-run time trial. Our workouts will generally be between the Raleigh NC State area to the Cary/Morrisville area. Locations will change week to week based on best use. At least one practice per week will include running games like capture the flag or ultimate frisbee. We will also include an occasional 2 mile singletrack hike. We will send a detailed schedule at the beginning of each week. Practices typically take place on Wednesday 445-545PM and Sunday 400-500PM afternoons. Spring Lightning Squad 2021


Fall 2021: TBD for September-October

Race distances and our training approach depend on the age of the participant - younger athletes complete shorter distances. For example, the 7-9 age group race is a 50 to 100 yard swim, ~2 mile bike, and 1/2 mile run.

Please note this is not a learn to swim program; your child needs to be able to swim at least 1 length of the pool without assistance.

What the program includes:
All seasons include two one-hour coach led practices per week. We will not be exercising for the entire hour. There will be lots of discussion and explanation and fun relays and games. More advanced athletes will break into a separate group. Our goal is for your kids to have a great time with some general fitness prep, some specific fitness prep, and be ready for the triathlon.

Practices will typically be on Wednesday at 445-545PM and Sunday at 400-500PM at locations in the Raleigh and Cary area.

What the program does not include:
Individual coaching
Training gear - bikes, goggles, helmets, shoes
USAT membership - $10 for youth athletes
Race entry fee

The program will include practice sessions in local pools (as available), runs and rides on greenways (no cars), gear advice, a mock triathlon practice 2-3 weeks before the event, and weekly email program details.

Refund and transfer policy: You may request a refund up to 1 week prior to the start of the training program for a full refund minus a processing fee of 5%. Within the 1 week period no refunds will be given. Transfers may be initiated to another youth athlete at no cost but you must confirm the transfer with Coach Marty or Coach Brooks.
